## GeoLite Databases and Services

GeoLite databases and web services provide free geolocation and limited network
data for IP addresses. This data is less accurate than the data in our paid,
GeoIP products and services. You must
[sign up for a free GeoLite account](https://www.maxmind.com/en/create-account)
in order to download GeoLite databases or query the GeoLite web services.
GeoLite uses the same integration methods and documentation as GeoIP (linked
below), with a few minor modifications. It is recommended that you get started
by [reading about GeoLite](/geoip/geolite2-free-geolocation-data).

## Understanding IP geolocation
<p>IP geolocation is inherently imprecise. Locations in MaxMind’s data are often
near population centers. Any location provided by GeoLite or GeoIP® should not
be used to identify a particular address or household.</p>

## [GeoLite on Snowflake](/geoip/geolite-on-snowflake/)
<p>MaxMind offers our GeoLite data through the
[Snowflake Marketplace](https://app.snowflake.com/marketplace/providers/GZ2FTZ5POF7/MaxMind).
If you do not have an existing Snowflake account, you will need to create one
before requesting access to the GeoLite datasets. Once approved, you will be
able to query GeoLite data within Snowflake.</p>
<p>The GeoLite Country and City datasets are updated twice weekly, every Tuesday
and Friday. The GeoLite ASN dataset is updated daily.</p>
## IP geolocation accuracy
> **⚠️ Warning**
>
 **IP Geolocation Usage**

IP geolocation is inherently imprecise. Locations are often near the center of
the population. Any location provided by a GeoIP database should not be used to
identify a particular address or household.

<p>Use the Accuracy Radius as an indication of geolocation accuracy for the
latitude and longitude coordinates we return for an IP address. The actual
location of the IP address is likely within the area defined by this radius and
the latitude and longitude coordinates.</p>

## [Privacy Exclusions API](/geoip/privacy-exclusions-api/)
<p>MaxMind maintains a list of Do Not Sell My Personal Information requests. This
API provides a simple way to retrieve
[privacy exclusion requests](https://www.maxmind.com/en/accounts/current/do-not-sell-requests)
in an automated fashion.</p>
<p>You can use the
[Privacy Exclusions OpenAPI specification](https://github.com/maxmind/openapi/blob/main/bundled/privacy-exclusions.yaml)
([raw file](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/maxmind/openapi/main/bundled/privacy-exclusions.yaml))
with API tools and code generators.</p>
## Request
### Request URI
<p>API calls should be made with an HTTP GET request to:
<code>https://api.maxmind.com/privacy/exclusions</code></p>
### Authorization/Security
<p>We use
[basic HTTP authentication](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_access_authentication).
The HTTP <code>Authorization</code> header is required for authorization. The username is
your
[MaxMind account ID](https://www.maxmind.com/en/accounts/current/license-key).
The password is your
[MaxMind license key](https://www.maxmind.com/en/accounts/current/license-key).
The authorization realm is <code>privacy-exclusion</code>.</p>

## [Testing GeoIP Web Services in the MaxMind Sandbox](/geoip/docs/web-services/sandbox-environment/)
MaxMind maintains a Sandbox environment so that you can do basic integration
tests with the web services. In order to set up a Sandbox account you must
already have a paid account, and you must be an account administrator.
[Learn how to set up a Sandbox account on our Knowledge Base.](https://support.maxmind.com/knowledge-base/articles/set-up-a-maxmind-sandbox-account)

Once you have your Sandbox account set up and activated, follow the steps below.

## Generate a License Key for the Sandbox
In order to test the web services in the Sandbox environment, you will need to
generate a license key from your Sandbox account.
[Learn how to generate a license key on our Knowledge Base.](https://support.maxmind.com/knowledge-base/articles/generate-a-maxmind-license-key)

The process is the same for your Sandbox account, but you must login to your
Sandbox account
[[direct link](https://sandbox.maxmind.com/en/accounts/current/license-key),
Sandbox account login required] rather than your regular MaxMind account.

## Build your integration
<p>Consult our [quick start guide](/geoip/geolocate-an-ip/web-services) or our
[list of client APIs](/geoip/geolocate-an-ip/web-services#client-apis) to
develop your integration.</p>

## [Track Location Name Updates](/geoip/track-location-name-updates/)
<p>MaxMind sources most of our place names (country, subdivision, and city names)
from [GeoNames](https://www.geonames.org/). We update place names based on
changes to GeoNames usually monthly, and publish the changes to a diff report.</p>
## Scope of changes reported
<p>The report covers changes to English-language location names for all locations
that appear in your GeoIP database. This includes city names, country names,
country codes, and subdivision codes.</p>
<p>The report compares location data between consecutive GeoIP database releases
and reports three types of changes:</p>

## [Updating GeoIP and GeoLite Databases](/geoip/updating-databases/)
> **⚠️ Warning**
>
In January 2024, we began using R2 presigned URLs for all
database downloads. You should make sure that your HTTP client follows redirects
and there are no proxy or firewall settings that would block requests to the
host we are redirecting to. We will redirect requests using HTTPS on the
following hostname:

- `mm-prod-geoip-databases.a2649acb697e2c09b632799562c076f2.r2.cloudflarestorage.com`

Existing database download links will continue to work, they will simply be
redirected.

[Read our release note for more information.](/geoip/release-notes/2024-01-17-presigned-urls-for-database-downloads/)

<p>There are two methods for automatically updating GeoIP and GeoLite binary
databases:</p>

## [Upgrading GeoIP Update from v3.x to v4.0 and higher](/geoip/upgrading-geoip-update/)
> **ℹ️ Info**
>
In 2019, we released a new major version of `geoipupdate`.
This document describes how you can upgrade from versions 3.x to versions 4.x
and higher.

If you are upgrading from version 4.x and higher to the latest version, please
consult the
[changelog of the latest release](https://github.com/maxmind/geoipupdate/releases)
for information.
## What changed
<p><code>geoipupdate</code> 4.x was a rewrite of the old <code>geoipupdate</code> and started from a new
modern code base. It supports the same core functionality and config file format
as before.</p>

## [What's New in GeoIP2](/geoip/whats-new-in-geoip2/)
<p>MaxMind&rsquo;s GeoIP2 web services and GeoIP2 databases are an evolution of our
original GeoIP web services and databases, which we now refer to as GeoIP
Legacy. This document highlights the most important changes for developers.</p>
## Data Changes
<p>GeoIP2 includes a variety of new data, as well as making changes to how existing
data is represented.</p>
### Localized Data
<p>Perhaps the biggest change is the inclusion of localized name data. The service
supports Brazilian Portuguese (<code>pt-BR</code>), English (<code>en</code>), French (<code>fr</code>), German
(<code>de</code>), Japanese (<code>ja</code>), Russian (<code>ru</code>), Simplified Chinese (<code>zh-CN</code>), and
Spanish (<code>es</code>).</p>
